A potted history:
Sound Techniques was established In 1989, when Mike Westgate and Stephen Buckland combined their 45 years of experience in professional sound. The original aim: ‘to supply superior location recording equipment’ in New Zealand and the South Pacific through sales and rentals. They recognised that digital recording with timecode was a means of improving recording quality while speeding up all post-production processes, from transfers to final mix.
Sound Techniques invested in the first portable professional DAT recorder and Denecke timecode slate in New Zealand. This initial investment was timely, and provided the basis for future expansion. Sound Techniques developed its knowledge of the digital recording on-location recording from its infancy.
In 1995 Sound Techniques opened a 5-day-a-week store in suburban Auckland to house its growing range of stock and rental equipment.
In 1998 Stephen quit his day job as a freelance sound mixer to manage the growing business full-time.
In early 2004 the business moved to larger premises in Newton, a district with a cluster of media-related businesses, on the fringe of the Auckland CBD. Recruitment of a Sales Manager overseas added to the pool of expertise. With three fulltime staff Sound Techniques was able to stay at the forefront of portable digital recording.
In 2006 Stephen bought out Mike’s share of the business and formed a limited liability company.
